Fashion
The 1920s was a time of change for most women, because they wanted to break away from being like their Victorian style mothers. Women began to get new haircuts, known as the bob. The bob was a short hair cut lining the back of the neck and curving inwards towards the face. Women changed the way they wore their clothes as well. Women discarded their corsets and began wearing loose fitting clothing. Women tried to dress boyish, which is why they wore loose fitting clothing to hide their female figure. They also exposed their skin more. For instance women began to go dancing and they would wear short dresses that would flap all over when they danced; this is where the term flappers come from. Most dresses or skirts had pleats, or slits to allow better dance movement. Women exposed their legs in these new dresses and skirts, because the hemline rose to the knee. Women began to wear more make up than ever before and cared more about how they looked than ever before. Most women cared more about how they looked because they wanted to impress the men around them.
Flappers
The term “Flappers” jumped on to the scene in the 1920s. The term was made to explain the clothes that women would wear and how they asked. A flapper was known for wearing too much make-up, wearing dress that were short and flashy, smoking, drinking in public, and wearing heels. All of the things that flappers would do as well as the different things that they would wear were all unacceptable in the eyes of a traditional women. These women would go out at night and go dancing with men. This has never been done before. Flappers were known for their wild and spontaneous behavior. They did as they pleased. Fashion was a vehicle they used to express themselves and be free from society's standards. Most of the women that were known, as flappers would only dress in the way that they did because they wanted to be different than their parents. Most of these women wanted to do the exact opposite of whatever their parents did.
Designer Coco Chanel
